What is the Experience? In June, 2015 we launched our first Year 9 Experience to the Northern Territory. The trip gave our year 9 community a chance to explore and question with greater depth their identities as Australians through direct-experience with remote communities and historical sites. Embarking from Darwin to explore neighbouring Litchfield and Kakadu World Heritage National Parks, students were challenged to explore Australian history through the lens of remote Australia. Throughout the trip we were introduced to local Indigenous guides, including eminent Associate Professor Don .... to broaden our awareness of Indigenous history, contemporary society and culture. At the Barunga Arts and Music festival students participated in a number of workshops making didgeridoos, learning about bush medicines, basket weaving and natural dying processes. We were introduced to a wide range of music; including performances from our Music Teacher Lazare Agneskis with Paul Kelly, Indigenous art and dance. After the festival we travelled North to Katherine where we experienced the iconic Katherine Gorge. We explored the historic site of Ubirr Rock, one of the most culturally significant Rock Art sites in the country with paintings presumed to be some 35,000 years old, documenting the arrival of the British. We woke before sunrise to cruise along the East Alligator river, watching birds, crocodiles and wild brumbies. Our final days were spent building connections with local school Kormilda College, an IB School in Darwin, and exploring the Art Gallery, infamous Mindil Beach Night Market & Botanical Garden.
